“Murder is like potato chips: you can’t stop with just one.” — Stephen King

Thanks to ennuiandapathy for this one. I had never previously realised the overlap between murderers and Pringles enthusiasts. #learningnewthings

–––––––––––

This is my final post of the day! Signing off as your local Chartist-in-Residence.

An immense thanks to Jason who runs this blog for the opportunity to take over for the day. More thanks to everyone who commented, reblogged, and liked the days charts. And an extra special thanks to all the quote-enthusiasts who submitted their favourites – there were so many good ones, I’ll likely be using a few for illustrated charts in the future!

Feel free to stop by mappleton.co whenever you feel the need for more quotation illustration in your life, I serve it up regularly.

“After the first glass, you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not. Finally you see things as they really are, and that is the most horrible thing in the world.” – Oscar Wilde

Thanks to likethatofarainbow for the quote! Oscar Wilde was definitely a character, and if anyone were to be given the opportunity to hang out with him (in the afterlife… obviously) I’m sure they would appreciate this guide to rely upon.

Carl Sagan passes on wisdom about the importance of...

Carl Sagan passes on wisdom about the importance of understanding the origins of cosmic bodies before you begin baking for the afternoon.

“We think we understand the rules when we become adults but what we really experience is a narrowing of the imagination.”

George Bernard Shaw warned us to “Beware of false...

George Bernard Shaw warned us to “Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance.”

Shaw is a fabulous person to quote, I rely on his words liberally and often. Also, full disclosure that I’m an anthropology major by trade and got a substantial kick out of fitting the ‘armchair anthropologists’ joke into this one (a term that refers to academics who don’t venture too far outside the library and hide from actual fieldwork – a crime anthropologists were especially guilty of in the early years of the discipline).

Ernest Becker points to the undeniable relationship between...

Ernest Becker points to the undeniable relationship between madness and wildly creative thinking.

“The road to creativity passes so close to the madhouse and often detours or ends there.”

If in doubt, always head for left field…

Raymond Chandler reminds us to stay humble, as our wits are...

Raymond Chandler reminds us to stay humble, as our wits are about as eternal as the food turning soft in our fridge (I’m looking at you cabbage…).

“Cleverness, like perhaps strawberries, is a perishable commodity.”

I find quote-hoarding to be a fabulous method of borrowing the knowledgable thoughts of others when my own fails.

Submit an Illuminating Quote, Have Mappleton Illustrate it!

Submit an Illuminating Quote, Have Mappleton Illustrate it!:
Dearest Chart-lovers!

Submit your best quotations hiding away in those digital treasure troves into the I Love Charts Ask Box for a chance to have them speed illustrated and uploaded to the blog before the day is out! I’ll pick two or three that lend themselves well to being charted (but will try extra hard to adapt any quotes I just adore) and get my speedy little pen to work – hopefully before 9pm EST.

In his opinion, “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.”

Treat every day as a space for doing what you love. Eg. Trolling the internet for charts! I know reddit can be a scary place, but I do recommend exploring the depths of r/Charts, r/DataIsBeautiful, r/Infographics, and of course r/QuotesPorn!

Chartist-in-Residency – Maggie Takes Over

Goooooooood morning chart-enthusiasts!

Welcome to a full day of chart-and-quote-related postings and reflections. I’m Maggie Appleton (I go by the pseudonym ”mappleton”) and I’ll be hosting I Love Charts here for the day. You can find a lot more of me and my illustrative chartings on my blog mappleton.co and my twitter @mappletons.

Charts have been a deep and lasting love of mine ever since I first stumbled across the work of legends such as David McCandless and began spending more time on Visua.ly than I did sleeping. While trying my hand at infographics a few times, keeping track of numbers and proportions in my art drove me up the wall. Eventually I compromised by tossing out accuracy, embracing oddity, and doing whatever the hell I wanted with my charts… this is the internet after all!

For the past few months I’ve been on a kick of doing “Illuminating Quotes, Visualised,” combining my passion for chart-like visualisation and great quotations – a project theme that has seemingly taken on a life of its own.

To give you a better idea of the hours ahead, lets start ourselves out with some old favourites:

One

Wake up with Neil DeGrasse Tyson and coffee!

Two

Simply perfecting my acute observation skills…

Three

I often try to solve the world problem of too few charts in order to avoid boredom.

joshsundquist:

I’m thrilled to announce that next Wednesday, May 22, Maggie Appleton will be doing a Chartist in Residence.

I first ran into Maggie’s work thanks to a few of her rather ingenious charts of quotations (like the one below) that made their way to my inbox. Maggie is an illustrator-designer-chartist with a penchant for anthropology, tea, and illuminating quotations and we will be giving her the keys to the blog next Wednesday to do whatever she choses for the entire day. Please tune in to see some brand new charts and illustrations and whatever else she decides to bring to the table with her unique charting style. Should be awesome!

Perhaps you’ve heard the news that Yahoo! has bought Tumblr. Rumors about the deal started swirling last week, on the night of Thursday, 5/16, and the deal was officially announced on Monday, 5/20.

Just 300 posts were shared on Tumblr about the rumor on Thursday. On Friday it was up to 1,216 posts, and by Sunday there were more 14,300 posts generating 757k reblogs and 420k likes! Over the past few days, more than 29,600 posts about Tumblr + Yahoo! were reblogged 2.5 million times by more than 1 million people.

And Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer’s announcement about the deal has received 5,578 reblogs and 4,387 notes so far (and that’s still climbing).

It’s been a big few days for Yahoo! and Tumblr. We’re tracking the whole Tumblr conversation about the news, so we’ll keep you posted on any interesting stats as things progress.
