Original version from The System 475: Bad News Flares

Relationships can be tough. Ending them can be even tougher. Hence this handy chart I developed to help keep you out of trouble. Trust me, you want to stay below the “breakup barrier”.

The original version had “snail mail” first and in person second, the rationale being that civil war letters and such were pretty damn sincere. But then I remembered what passes for mail nowadays, so ‘eff that noise.

I call this one “Why I Hate Taxis*” (originally posted here).

NOTE: This isn’t a folding bike.

It’s been said about my site that it’s a mixture of coffee, biking, and graphic design jokes. Just wanted to make sure the biking got in there. If you like this one, here’s all the posts on my site with biking. I know what you’re thinking! ‘He’s one of these cycling elitist hipster d-bags.’ To that I respond, no. I am not a d-bag.

Truth be told there are plenty of cycling idiots out there, just as there are car-driving idiots. But the car people don’t really need my defense, and the bike people could use it as all the above chart would do to a taxi is ding their paint job.

*See how the title suddenly alters the meaning? That’s what I love about charts!

This one is brand SPANKIN new, created in honor of today’s chartist festivities, but will soon be cross-posted over at my site.

They say the unexamined life is not worth living, and I for one am inclined to agree. Thus I provide this chart of my own experiences with coffee. And caps lock. Note the physical limitations. The keyboard and typographic media to which it is linked can only provide so much assistance as an expressive tool. Type can only be so bold and so italic and SO CAPS. But we can try. OH YES WE CAN TRY.

Is there anything so frustrating than being frustrated in 12pt type? I dare say no. If you say otherwise, shoot a question over to http://ilovecharts.tumblr.com/ask. I’m listening.

Venn Diagrams (Part 1)
(via The System 288: Venn Diagrams)

To wax Seinfeldian for a minute, “What’s the deal with Venn diagrams?”

What was once a helpful logical tool has become a true art form practiced by some of the great artists of our time.  Above is one possible explanation of it, people love Venn diagrams due to their (pleasing?) rounded forms. In a culture obsessed with body image, it only makes sense that we would see these forms everywhere and love them, knowingly or not.

Also, like singing “Yellow Submarine”, once this is pointed out to you it seems to get stuck in your head for a very long time.

And as it happens, today’s SMBC is a graph joke. Enjoy!

I want to give a hearty thanks to Jason for setting this all up. I’m a reader of this blog, so it’s a real treat to be in command for a day. It’s a LOT more work than it seems!

For those of you unfamiliar with my work, here are some handy links:

You can find more dirty jokes, geek jokes, and graph jokes at Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal.

You can find more of the videos at SMBC Theater.

And, if you’re already a fan, we just announced the very first SMBC Book. Go check it out, and please consider coming to our launch party (date TBA).

Thanks to everyone for reading! It’s been a fun day.

XOXO,

Zach Weiner
