“Percentages shown are how often the issue on each row [horizontal] was rated as ‘More Important’ than the issue in the corresponding column [vertical]. Bold and Black = ‘Win’ - Bold and Red = ‘Loss’ That is Statistically Significant”

[I added the above as a service because I can never keep the two straight]

A bit of an overwhelming way to look at this data, but really interesting once you start digging in.

What Do You Want To Know About The DNC?

Tumblr is all over this election. Over at election, they are wrapping up a week of kick-ass, boots on the ground coverage of the Republican National Convention, replete with interviews and photosets and GIFs and insight and snark. The Election 2012 tag is loaded with election news and commentary from all corners of Tumblr. Basically, we in here.

When next you see me on the net I will be in Charlotte doing my part for Tumblr, covering the Democratic National Convention. I will be sleuthing around for charts (and things that deserve to be made fun of with charts), posting photos and commentary on my personal tumblr, and some combination of all of the above, plus more in-depth pieces and silliness, at the Tumblr Election center.

So … what do you want me to find out for you? I’ll be asking people nosy questions, trying to figure out exactly who shows up at these things. I’ll be poking me head into any weird gathering I come across, crashing parties, hoarding finger foods. They’ve let Tumblr loose on the American political process, so let’s have some fun with it.

See you in Charlotte!

Where and When Do Candidates Raise Money? An Awesome Visualization

From Mauro Martino at Northeastern University comes this intriguing infographic of fundraising by the presidential candidates from March 2011 to Feburary 2012.

There’s a lot going on here, but the animated graphic shows how much each of the candidates raised each week and what states it came from, based on the amount of contribution per capita. The top half lists the states on a spectrum from most liberal to most conservative.

What’s great about the graphic is it shows just how drastically Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are in a different monetary league than the other Republican candidates who battled Romney for the nomination. That’s most obvious in the spikes — Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Santorum seldom did better than Romney even on their best days, but Romney’s highest peaks are exponentially larger than theirs.
